USM Haller: A piece that holds and builds value over time

In the world of furniture, almost every purchase depreciates from the moment it leaves the shop. There are a few remarkable exceptions, and USM Haller is one of them. This is not a sales argument: it is an observable reality in the second-hand market, documented by decades of transactions.

Here is why, and what it means for your purchasing decision.

At UBER-MODERN, France's leading USM Haller distributor, we know this phenomenon well: clients who bought their first configurations fifteen or twenty years ago contact us regularly to extend them, and we sometimes speak with them about the value of what they have in their hands.

Why USM Haller Does Not Depreciate

The resistance to depreciation of a USM Haller piece comes from several factors that reinforce each other.

The first is universal compatibility: every USM Haller component produced today is compatible with those made fifty years ago. There is no obsolete version, no outdated generation. A 1968 tube assembles perfectly with a 2025 panel. This technical continuity is unique in the furniture industry.

The second is the timelessness of the design: the form of the USM Haller system follows no fashion and belongs to no particular era. It therefore cannot age aesthetically. A USM piece bought in 2005 does not look dated in 2025.

A USM Haller piece is one of the rare everyday objects of which one can say with confidence that it will be worth in twenty years what it is worth today.

The USM Haller second-hand market is one of the most active and stable in design furniture. On major European resale platforms, well-maintained USM configurations regularly sell for between 60 and 80 per cent of their original price, even after ten to fifteen years of use. The most sought-after finishes (pure white, anthracite, graphite black) sometimes command even higher resale rates.

Several factors explain this stability: second-hand demand is strong because new delivery lead times are long (8 to 14 weeks depending on configuration); the quality of second-hand pieces remains excellent because the material and construction are designed to last for decades; and the universal compatibility of components allows second-hand pieces to be integrated into a new configuration without compromise.

The Comparison With Alternatives

To understand what USM Haller's resistance to depreciation represents, it is useful to put it in perspective with alternatives.

Type of furniture Value after 10 years Repairability Evolvability
Premium mass market 5 to 15% of purchase price Near zero None
Trendy contemporary design 10 to 30% of purchase price Limited None
Traditional bespoke furniture 20 to 40% of purchase price Possible but costly Impossible
USM Haller 60 to 80% of purchase price Full, for life Unlimited

The conclusion of this comparison is counter-intuitive but solid: USM Haller costs less over time than most of its alternatives, even those offered at a lower initial purchase price. A piece that retains 70% of its value after ten years actually costs 30% of its initial price for ten years of use, which is often less expensive than alternatives that depreciate entirely.

Maintaining Your USM Haller to Preserve Its Value

The durability of USM Haller is not solely a matter of design: it also depends on maintenance. Good practice is simple.

  • Cleaning: a slightly damp cloth is sufficient for lacquered panels. Avoid abrasive products that attack the finish.
  • Component replacement: every USM component is available individually from an authorised dealer. A scratched panel, a damaged joint can be replaced without dismantling the whole.
  • Reconfiguration: if your use changes, your piece can change with it. USM Haller can be completely reconfigured by our teams, including in a different finish if you wish to refresh the whole.

Buy New or Second-Hand?

The question deserves to be asked directly. Buying a second-hand USM Haller piece is a serious option, provided a few points are checked: the condition of the panels (scratches, chips), the condition of the ball joints (no excessive play), the coherence of finishes if several batches are assembled, and the provenance (an office piece has often sustained more wear than a residential one).

New offers two advantages that second-hand cannot guarantee: access to the full range of configuration options (dimensions, finishes, accessories) and the manufacturer's warranty. For large-scale projects or complex configurations, we recommend buying new. For a first piece or an extension to an existing configuration, second-hand deserves serious consideration.

At UBER-MODERN, we also advise on second-hand purchases and can help you assess the quality of a piece before acquisition.
